It may be some weeks before I’ll be back at work, but my file of encounters and experiences, which I should be able to use to illustrate any number of ethics lectures or seminars, is getting fatter by the day. For example:

Nurse:  I’m just going to ask you a few questions. Is that OK?
Me:  Of course.
Nurse:  So. Do you have any stairs in your house?
Me:  Two flights.
Nurse:  Right. Is there anyone else living with you?
Me:  Husband. Two teenagers.
Nurse:  Right. Do you want to be resuscitated?
Me:  I’m sorry?
Nurse:  Resuscitation. You know, if you want to be resuscitated.
Me:  Yes, I do actually.
Nurse:  Right. Any bathroom downstairs?
