That’s true, and way less funny than a bolt of Popes. Yet your characters are layered (even pontiffs are bridges) and Rachel has many secret attributes herself. I think that she would have kept a few yards of something nice, well hidden and out of sight, especially from her own view.
very cool – those birds are tui (native of New Zealand), which leads me to suspect that the flowers are most likely pohutukawa flowers, also a native of NZ – pohutukawa flower around Christmas and so are known as the NZ Christmas tree. Your socket is a kiwi icon x 2!!
oh, there goes my cover as a lurker!!
How fascinating – thank you so much for this! I’ve just googled pohutukawa flowers and tui birds and compared them to my lovely socket and you’re right! I’ve always wanted to go to NZ – all the more reason to now.
you are welcome! The birds are beautiful, they have an amazing range of song, from truly melodic to utterly raucous, and are fiercely territorial towards other birds. The trees are huge, often grow out of the sides of cliffs, and are just a blaze of red when they flower – well worth a visit!!
